Best Places to Cry in New Orleans
Not all cries are created equal. Some need privacy, some need movement, some need a little drama.
This is a guide for our new orleans bb’s for when you’re in it and need a place to go that isn’t your bed.
The Car (parked, obviously)
It’s a classic for a reason. You can be contained, have privacy, plus it’s emotionally efficient.
GOOD FOR: ugly crying, voice notes you’ll never send, staring straight ahead
PARK NEAR: somewhere in Uptown where no one’s paying attention
Crescent City Park
You can literally sit on the Mississsippi River because big water equals big feelings. The scale really helps.
GOOD FOR: existential spirals, transitions, letting something go
WHEN: especially good at sunset when everything feels a little *too* meaningful
Audubon Park
You can walk and cry here without anyone blinking, because Tulane students couldn’t care less about you and there’s something about the trees that absorbs it a little.
GOOD FOR: processing something slow, relationship grief, “what am i doing with my life”
BONUS: you can pretend you’re just…thinking
A Cemetery (pick your fave)
There is no literally not a more appropriate place to cry than at a cemetery. It is quiet, you can be reflective, and people actually expect tears there.
GOOD FOR: grief that doesn’t have a clear place to land, thinking about time, talking to people who aren’t here
NOTE: be respectful, but also…you won’t be the only one feeling something
City Park (the chime tree)
The chimes are your soundtrack here, they’re magical. Lie down on the grass, lean against a bench, and let them carry your tears. The tree basically sets the mood!
GOOD FOR: overwhelmed, need-to-lie-down energy, gentle crying that might turn into a nap
NOTE: better when no one else is there
The Shower (not only for our New Orleans baddies)
Water on water!!! No need to say more.
GOOD FOR: loud crying, dissociating while coming back into your body
ALSO GOOD: hot water masks red crying face
Inside or Outside of C’mere
A slightly unhinged choice, but hear me out… we loooove crying, plus you can leave with a cry towel to assist in your meltdown.
GOOD FOR: dramatic crying, feeling like a character, being alone in a public way
BONUS: help us make Cry Club content!
The Bathroom at a Bar You Didn’t Want to be at Anyway
You already know this one (looking at you R Bar)
GOOD FOR: quick emotional resets, looking at yourself in the mirror and being like “oh”
BONUS: 5–7 minutes, then straight home
Anywhere on Your 10 Mile Walk on Mardi Gras Day (*seasonal only)
If you didn’t cry on Mardi Gras, did you even Mardi Gras? Something about the costumes, magic, and chaos really bring out the emotions and the street itself becomes your stage.
GOOD FOR: big, sprawling releases, processing everything at once, dramatic energy
TIP: embrace it, everyone’s already in a heightened emotional state, so no one will blink twice
On the Street Car
When you don’t need privacy, motion can really help in crying! Find a seat by the window, and let the city roll by. There’s something about the rhythm and the passing scenery that makes it okay to let it out.
GOOD FOR: crying in motion, thinking things through, subtle public meltdown
TIP: pick a less crowded line (Canal or St. Charles after peak hours) if you want some elbow room
Last Thing to Note…
You don’t need the perfect place (and also one doesn’t exist), but sometimes a place helps your body understand what’s happening.
if you cried this week in New Orleans (somewhere not on this list) i kind of want to know where, send us an email or a DM and let us know.
